OpenLayers 3 allows the display of map data in any Web browser (desktop or mobile). Just as OpenLayers 2, this library supports various data formats and services. The code of OpenLayers 3 is not based on OpenLayers 2’s; it has been completely rewritten to take advantage of the latest Web technologies such as WebGL in order to improve the performances and extend the possibilities of the library, especially in terms of vector and 3D views. However its API facilitates the development of a Web map application.

OpenLayers 3 does require any specific plugin to run on a Web browser.
